I’ve partnered with three other crochet designers, Elisabeth Desamour of Desamour Designs, Natalia McHayle of Talia’s Crochet Creations, and Whitney Anderson of Whitney Marie Anderson, to present to you the Bloom Collection!
The Bloom Collection is a Spring themed crochet collection centered around showcasing the work of Black makers within the fiber community. It features two crochet garment patterns and two crochet accessory patterns.
Each of us had the opportunity to partner with a Black indie yarn dyer to bring you a collection of crochet pieces that is perfect for the warm weather ahead. I mean four crochet patterns from four amazing crochet designers, backed by four different yarn dyers?! Can it really get any better than that?
First dreamed up in October 2020, the Bloom Collection is a visual representation of Black excellence within the fiber community. Often times the work of Black makers may go unnoticed or overlooked. And to be honest, that can become very discouraging as an artist. The thing is, this isn’t due to a lack of talent, it’s due to the lack of being recognized, but the great thing is things can turn around. And my hope is that the Bloom Collection can be a step in the right direction for putting some spotlight on the makers within the Black community.

The Zinnia Top
My contribution to the collection is the Zinnia Top, the crochet Spring garment of my dreams. This v-neck plunge crochet top is slightly cropped to accentuate your natural curves. The Zinnia Top features a ruffled peplum edging around the bottom and on the sleeves that gives it just the right amount of flirtiness. The star of the show, and my favorite part of the top, is the keyhole feature located on the back of the top. So if you’re wondering what’s missing from your wardrobe, it’s definitely this crochet top.

The Yarn
Finding the perfect yarn dyer isn’t an easy process. I spent hours looking through social media and websites looking for the perfect dyer to make my crochet dreams come to life, but I didn’t have any luck. One day, I was sitting on the couch “watching” music videos, as I often do, and crocheting. The music video for the song “Entrepreneur” by Pharrell Williams was on. Now normally, I’m too focused to even look up at the television to see what’s going on, but something told me to look up. When I did finally look up, there she was, my yarn dyer Lola Johnson of Third Vault Yarns. She was standing there in all her melanated glory in front of this wall of gorgeous yarn and from there I just knew it was meant to be.
The Zinnia Crochet Top uses Third Vault Yarns in the colorway Sakura, and I promise it’s to dye for (see what I did there)! Swirls of different color pinks and purples, speckled with hints of yellow and subtle spots of blue will make you feel like you’re walking through a garden. When I received this yarn I knew exactly what I would crochet with it, and it worked out perfectly! Let me give you some more deets on the yarn. It is a 4-ply fingering weight yarn that comes in skeins of 400 m (approximately 437 yds per 100 g). And on top of being absolutely gorgeous, the 100% Superwash Merino is soft to work with a gives a great drape for crochet garments. For the Zinnia Top, you will need 4-5 skeins of the yarn, depending on the size you’re making.
Lola (@thirdvaultyarns) will be doing a special shop update today featuring the colorway Sakura. Make sure you grab your skeins! I promise you won’t want to miss out.
